Affordable Produce Program (APP)

We offer free and reduced farm bucks to any low-income community members, veterans, anyone impacted by the Dixie Fire and/or anyone who is food insecure. You do not have to qualify for SNAP to qualify for our program.

There are three options for those who qualify:

  • Tier 1: Pay $0, volunteer 10 hours throughout the season, and receive 300 farm bucks.

  • Tier 2: Pay $50, volunteer 5 hours throughout the season, and receive 300 farm bucks.

  • Tier 3: Pay $100, no volunteering throughout the season, and receive 300 farm bucks.

*We accept EBT/Calfresh and offer a monthly payment plan

In collaboration with Plumas County Public Health, we are offering 3 free cooking classes to demonstrate new ways of incorporating farm produce into your meals. Attending any cooking demonstration counts towards your volunteer hours.

FAQs

Do I need to qualify for EBT to get Free and Reduced Farm Bucks?

NO! Many of our participants have extenuating life circumstances that don’t qualify them for state or federal food assistance but make it difficult to buy fresh produce. If you regularly do not buy fresh produce because of the cost, you likely qualify for our program.

I don’t can’t make it to the weekly volunteer days, but can’t afford the $100… should I still apply?

YES! We are going to be offering more weekend opportunities for volunteering this summer including opportunities with activities for children. We can also offer suggestions based on the skills you bring to the table for how you can contribute.

Does volunteering on the farm require me to do hard physical labor?

NO! We have plenty of things for people to do that do not require hard physical labor. We can always find something for you to do that fits your skills and abilities.

Rugged Roots Farm in Plumas County

A 2.5 acre regenerative farm feeding residents and visitors of Plumas County since 2019.

We grow fruit, veggies, herbs and flowers and offer weekly farmstands and u-pick opportunities June through October. Rugged Roots Farm is located in Quincy, CA, in a beautiful valley on the banks of Spanish Creek. We use regenerative agricultural practices including cover-cropping, pollinator hedgrows, composting and mulch, and have several no-till zones to build soil health and reduce emissions. Rugged Roots is a “learning farm” for education, workshops and workforce training programs.
